Prokritee
The Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) started working in Bangladesh in 1920 and initiated income-generating programs for rural women in 1975. In 2001, MCC created a new service agency, Prokritee an independent non-profit organization. Prokritee, a Bangla phrase which means "nature", referring to the all-natural materials used to make their products. Prokritee works with 7 indiviual enterprises with the goal of generating income for poor, rural women. These 7 enterprises are: Bagdha Enterprise (jute and hemp producers); Biborton Handmade Paper; Bonoful Handmade Paper; Hajiganj Handicrafts (Kaisa grass baskets and crochet products); Jobarpar Enterprise (water hyacinth paper);Keya Palm Handicrafts and Shuktara Handmade Paper.Prokritee supports and ensures the livelihoods of more than one thousand rural arisans, mainly women who are able to look at the future with hope and happiness, instead of poverty and despair. Prokritee offers training in organizational and business skills, export marketing and leadership and works only with the poorest Bangladeshis.
