    • Hi Erika,
      In working with most any type of marketing, but especially trade shows, ByHand Consulting recommends participating at a minimum three times. This allows you as the producer to gain a better understanding of the marketplace and refine your presentation and product offerings to your target customer. From the Buyer side, when a buyer first sees you, they don’t have any understanding of you or your business. You are an unknown to them and they to you. As they see you in future shows they grow accustomed to you and your products and they have confidence you are a legitimate business as you have shown consistency in your presence and growth in your presentation and understanding of market demands.

      At a first show in a new country or market, you should expect to receive mostly contacts who express interest in your goods. You can use this time as well to study the market in terms of target customers, price points, etc. After the event you should follow-up on specific requests and start communicating with these contacts about their needs. Prior to your second showing be sure to inform them you will be attending and would like to see them again.

      During the second event you will receive more contacts from new sources and should expect to start seeing small orders from your previous show interactions. Again maintain contact with your existing buyers and your new contacts and reach out to them prior to the third show. With those customers who ordered be sure to fulfill their orders fully, to agreed specification and in the agreed upon timeframe.

      It is at the third show, you should start to fully realize the fruits of your labor and will start to get larger more lucrative orders from the contacts you have been cultivating. You will see a notable difference in how both returning and new customers view your firm as your consistent presence has offered a certain level of legitimacy to your firm. Now you have maintain this presence and be sure to keep your relationships happy and healthy by meeting all of your commitments.

      It takes time to develop relationships in any market, and we have found three shows will usually tell you if a market is the right place for you. One time exhibiting at a trade fair cannot tell you a lot about the market and your product. You need at least three showings for you to understand the market and for the market to understand you.

    I’m working on a long-term, large-scale, privately-funded redevelopment (actually “reinvention”) plan for the Central Montana community of Lewistown. A key element in terms of priority, physical location, and the overall success of the plan, is what I’m tentatively calling an “artisan’s village” in the 23,000 total sf (+/-) on the main floors of the three buildings (built in 1901, 1908, & 1913, and operated for many years as the Power Mercantile Company) that anchor the prime corner of downtown Lewistown. I’m envisioning 30-40 artisans individually “doing their thing”, but also marketing themselves together (with a state-of-the-art web presence and management) as the “Big Spring Creek Artisans”…named for the large stream that flows through town and under Main Street.
