Silk Making in Nepal

Posted in Textiles

Watch the process of turning cocoons into luxurious silk fiber. The pupae are removed, and the cocoons are boiled and stirred in soapy water. This causes the cocoons to stick together and soften. The cocoons are then rinsed. They are then stretched across a wooden frame to dry. A single frame can hold over 50 single layers. After drying, the mass is peeled from the frame. The layers, or sheets, are then pulled apart to create what resembles a large cotton ball. Now it is ready to be spun into thread.
