Capiz is a shell that is harvested off of the coast of the Philippines. Artisans who work with the fair trade craft organization SAFFY in the Philippines are skilled at working with the delicate layers of capiz. The capiz is cut, layered, and placed into metal frames for making beautiful translucent ornaments and other decorative items. The capiz can also be layered and painted, forming hard and durable sculptures.
