Golden Rules of Exporting

One of the best resources I have found about Exporting for Small Handcrafts Businesses is a book called Export Marketing for a Small Handicraft Business by Edward Millard. It was published by Oxfam in 1996 and I believe it is currently out of print. It draws from the many years of experience that Oxfam had working with small crafts exporters when they were still involved in crafts importing and sales. One of the gems of that book is the 10 Golden Rules of Exporting. These are the basic things that all crafts exporters should be able to do well, and serves as a good checklist when preparing an order.

THE GOLDEN RULES OF EXPORTING

1.       Confirm the customer's order promptly

2.       Provide customer your bank details and preferred method of payment

3.       Make the products exactly as specified

4.       Follow the labeling and packaging instructions

5.       Impose strict quality control

6.       Pack the consignment adequately to avoid breakage

7.       Meet the delivery date

8.       Ship it by the methods requested

9.       Send full and correct commercial documents

10.   Communicate any difficulties; clarify any uncertainties
